The U.S. Army Drill Sergeant represents the epitome of what a soldier should be, and has come to symbolize today's modern army. It is his duty to instill the military skills and discipline that will turn boys into men and men into soldiers. He relies upon a variety of psychological techniques, including intimidation, repetition and punishment to strip away undisciplined civilian thinking and replace it with a military mindset. Standing nose to nose and screaming into the face of a new recruit, the Drill Sergeant makes his point in a manner that is not soon forgotten. And when the punishment for a wrong answer is to "drop and give me fifty," recruits have more incentive to learn the correct answer.
