Having grown up watching The Superfriends, Black Manta as part of the Legion of Doom fascinated me. As an adult, I collected some Aquaman comics with Black Manta and decided I wanted to make a figure of him for the Super Powers line that I had started collecting. This version is based on Black Manta's first comic book appearance from the 1960s. I used a Riddler figure from Toybiz's DC Heroes line, with arms from a World of Batman Bruce Wayne. The helmet was the clear plastic bubble of the robot from the toy line based on the Lost in Space feature film. I used plastic strips to make they eyes of the helmet. The head was too large, so I cut the finished helmet into fours, removed some of the center, glued them back together, and sanded them to make it seamless. The backpack was a discarded electronic piece from a circuit board I got from my then-job, covered in epoxy and sanded. The hoses were discarded rubber rings from a machine at work. Black Manta fits right in with Kenner's Super Powers line.
