Here is my 12 inch custom figure of Storm Shadow from GI Joe, based on the classic design from the 1980s. I based the custom on the 3 3/4 inch figure and its card art, but also took a little from the GI JOE comic book from Marvel back in the day. I try to make these 12 inch figures feel like toys that Hasbro could have and should have produced as opposed to the rather crummy treatment they actually did offer up over the years. The Lanard bodies I use for the base aren't as poseable as others out there, but I like how they fill out the uniforms nicely. The head came from a GI JOE vs. Cobra Storm Shadow, though I used other heads that I had painted prior to this one. As better head sculpts came along, I would upgrade. The outfit was a white tee shirt, a tunic I ordered online, and some random white pants I had. I cut the sleeves off and hemmed them, taking my cue from the way he was drawn in the comic books. I used medical tape on the forearms, carefully cut to narrower strips. I used the tape for the lower legs and feet as well. The backpack was custom made out of a clear plastic case I had which I cut down to size and coated in pleather fabric. The sash and strap were made from pleather as well. The weapons were ordered online, some from other 12 inch JOEs and others such as the bow, arrows, and nunchucks were more specialty items. I know Sideshow eventually did these figures, but their offerings look weirdly realistic to me which is off putting, and they often get some of the details wrong. I do not care for their figures and wanted to make my own instead.
