So now I bring you my daily villain. And what a villain it is! As they say in comics, the most dangerous enemy is the one who is the equal and opposite of the hero. Well, they don't get much more equal and opposite than this! Well, maybe Venom and Spider-Man . . . I'm diverging. Anyway, here's Dark Samus, from Metroid Prime 2: Echoes!

I had a lot of fun with every aspect of this figure, from the very beginning. Though DS is technically a semi-clone/hybrid of Samus, I chose a larger, bulkier figure than Psylocke because, let's face it, Dark Samus is RIPPED. I did have to cut Green Lantern down to size a bit, those DCUC figures are pretty big, but the end result was exactly what I wanted.

I built the shoulder orbs out of Loctite Epoxy Putty and glass home decor craft beads, the kind people put in vases and candle bowls, to give them that transparent crystalline appearance Dark Samus has. The head, likewise, is a single glass bead completely surrounded by putty. The great part is, there's a hole in the back of the head so that, as you can see, you can shine a light in her head and make her eyes glow. Dark Samus has light-piped eyes!

The hand and feet came from a Legendary Super Heroes Judge Death, since they had the desired veiny, gnarled, organic look. The arm cannon was another magic marker cap. The paint job was a blast, mixing the various shades of blue, black, and white, plus the little blue veins running all over her body.

Eventually, I intend to make a Phazon display base with LEDs wired through it. The base will extend over her head and shine one LED directly onto her light-pipe hole, so her visor glows all the time. But for now, I think she stands up just fine on her own. And though it may not translate through the photos, in person, man, does she look imposing!

See you next mission!

Thanks! This is one of my best friend's favorite figures . . . in person. When he saw these photos of it here on the Realm, he said "Dude . . . that doesn't look right at ALL!" It really looks SO much better IRL. I may have to re-photo this, but even then, I'm not totally sure it'll improve. She just may not be very photogenic.

I think it looks great! maybe if you tried to photo it against a darker backdrop you would get more of the effect you wanted. But seriously, this is awesome! I've been wanting to do this one for years!

"Actually, This figure did originally have a gloss semi-metallic finish, but all detail was lost in the glare, and rather than looking like fluctuating color, it just looked poorly finished. So I sprayed the entire figure with matte finish."
I know exactly what you mean. I've had multiple cases where I've had to take hundreds of photos until getting an agreeable one, then posting it and seeing flaws invisible to the naked eye, or simply not actually there. I didn't mean to knock the figure, if I came off that way. it's great. especially the sculptwork on the mask.

Very nice custom, you really have great skills on sculpting. How did you get this appearance of translucidness?

It's all in the paint job. Lots of dry brushing in layers so the paint gradually, smoothly changes color.

Spot on. You may want to put on some acrylic or metallic paints.

You mean gloss or metallic? Because all my paints are acrylic water based.
Actually, This figure did originally have a gloss semi-metallic finish, but all detail was lost in the glare, and rather than looking like fluctuating color, it just looked poorly finished. So I sprayed the entire figure with matte finish.
For the record, this figure is rather darker than the photos make her out (should have adjusted the bright/contrast in Photoshop, but didn't get around to it). In person, it's really about as dark as the light-pipe test photo in pic 2.
