What popular culture has finally begun to understand is the effect The Cure has had upon a generation of artists who have grown up with their music, who for the last 30 years have never known a world without The Cure. For this contest, I decided that a 1989 Disintegration-era Robert Smith would be the most obvious choice; this tends to be the first image of the Cure that most people recognize. This particular look can be from the Lovesong video or from an 89 concert. The base figure can be seen in the second pic, as well as some of the sculpting and modifications before painting. The part that took the most work was the face- a lot of fine trimming, slicing and sanding to get the fine details. This was very slow and time-consuming, but well worth it. It definitely means the difference between having a figure of Robert Smith, or having a figure of Some Guy Dressed As Robert Smith. The feet were cut off and repositioned -Mr.Smith usually stands pigeon-toed;) The shoes were epoxy`d over, molded into hi-top sneakers. The jackets on the base figure were rubber, I pulled them out, filled the gaps and molded shirt and cuffs. Upper arms and legs were heavily trimmed and sanded to remove bulkiness, pants became tapered jeans (Give props, Emo boys!). The ears had to be sliced off and molded back on properly(they were nearly flat against the head, and way too far back!). The hair is a small piece of fake fur, given a haircut and messed up. That was fun! Acrylic paints, Dullcote spray. The sweater is made from t-shirt fabric and is removable. Shoelaces are embroidery thread. The acoustic guitar is a BECK 1/12th scale epiphone, painted black, the fender guitar is probably from a McFarlane figure, I got the mic stand from a Kiss figure. And there he is! Ready to be posed with a David Bowie Labyrinth figure, or maybe taking some other action figures to the School of Rock. ![]() |

If a Robert Smith figure had to be beaten by anybody, it may as well be a Paul McCartney.
I still adore that David Bowie figure.....
