Based on The MOTU Movie Character:
Saurod was introduced into the MOTU mythology with his appearance in the 1987 live action movie starring Dolph Lundgren. Played by Pons Maar, he was one of Skeletor's bounty hunters, a reptile marksman armed with a laser gun and a set of retractable razor-sharp claws. He was mute throughout his scenes and only expressed himself through hissing. His role in the movie was fairly brief, as he was killed off early into the film after failing Skeletor in a mission to Earth. Paying the price for the failure of all the small mercenary band, he was incinerated alive by a burning energy bolt from Skeletor's hand. In the comic book adaptation of the film, Saurod is oddly depicted without a tail. He also talks in several scenes, and is described as an expert tracker, something shown in a scene (not found in the film) where he sniffs out Julie hiding in the school library and demands to know the location of the Cosmic Key. Possibly the largest difference between the film and the comic is that Saurod is never killed. The scene where the mercenaries return to Eternia is not present, and Saurod appears a few more times elsewhere in the comic, including the scene of the villains ransacking Julie's house and interrogating Kevin. After the release of the movie, Saurod was incorporated into the MOTU toy line by Mattel. His action figure had the special feature of shooting sparks from its mouth, though the character had never displayed such an ability in the movie. He displayed this power – as well as the power of speech – in the figure's accompanying mini-comic "The Cosmic Key" in which he was brought to Eternia together with Blade to serve Skeletor. In the minicomic and most media, Saurod's spark power from the toy was depicted as a laser, but issue 10 of the Marvel MOTU comics depicted his power as sparks that induce sleep. His Origin : Saurod was a Snakeman. He was the true and original second in command after King Hiss. The best tracker and most aggressive Snakeman of all. In his youth he lived in a swamp, King Hiss found him and raised him. King Hiss lead the Snakemen against the humans and The Snakemen were the original rulers of Eternia for centuries. The Evil Horde journey world by world conquering all in the Galaxy. Hordak the leader of the Evil Horde and second in command of his brother Horde Prime (Ruler of the Planet Horde) is a Scientist and a Sorcerer. Thanks to Hordak, the Evil Horde are the only ones to who can successfully join and link magic and science as one. When the Evil Horde conquered Etheria (Princess Adora`s world) they learned of Eternia and decided conquer it too. When the Evil Horde arrived to Eternia, the Snakemen were the rulers and a bloody battle began. The Snakemen and the Evil Horde have been enemies from centuries. During a battle Grisslor captured Saurod and the Evil Horde experimented with Saurod. Hordak designed an artifact, that could transform a living being into a living machine. In the future Hordak will use this tecnology to create Extendar and Dragstor; Skeletor as a former disciple of Hordak used this technology to create Spydor (The living Spider Machine) too. Saurod was transformed into a living machine (A kind of cyborg) and he lost all his memories. When the process finished he was very powerful, but He didn't know who Hordak, the Evil Horde or the Snakemen were. Hordak never trusted in Saurod and ordered him imprisoned to the Fright Zone in Etheria forever. Years later when the final battle between the Evil Horde and the Snakemen began, Saurod escaped from the Fright Zone. Saurod arrived to the battlefield hours before the battle, when he arrived only found the Snakemen. He didn't recognized Rattlor and who as the new second in command thought Saurod was a secret weapon sent from the Evil Horde. Rattlor captured Saurod and King Hiss send him to a timeless dimension. The Evil Horde won the battle, and Hordak sent all the Snakemen to a timeless dimesion; a completely different one from Saurod`s dimesion. Exactly before the MOTU movie, Skeletor needs more experienced Bounty Hunters to capture the Sorceress and made a spell to bring to him the best bounty hunters of the galaxy; at the moment Saurod and Blade appear. Saurod, was still without memories; Skeletor gives Saurod a new opportunity to live as a member of his team and Saurod accepts. Saurod and Blade captured the Sorceress and the movies start its story. In the movie Saurod died by the Skeletor`s hand; but in the Comics Saurod is still alive. He is the most powerful member of Skeletor`s team. He has more strength than Grisslor and Leech together; he is the best tracker of the Galaxy and he is almost as smart as tri klops. Many times in the comic, Saurod has work with Tri Klops designing artifacts. Nobody knows how Saurod learned to expell fire from his mouth, maybe is a secondary effect of the transformation process. The Evil Horde destroyed his humanity, the Snakemen sent him away and for Skeletor he is only a servant. With the exception of Kahn's reptile toes being cut off & replaced with fixit sculpt, Saurods lower body from feet to waist stayed the same. Everything waist up is either sculpted or dremeled. The armor was a one piece sculpt around entire torso. after about 2 hours of drytime I placed the seperate sections of armor on starting top to bottom. there are 9 individual pieces with the center piece. decresing thickness for "layering" when finished I placed the center piece. The silver areas are actually his chain mail. I decided the best way to recreate the chain mail was to use a dentist bit and dremel small indentations all over these parts of his body. Khan's head is a squirt pump, so he needed it replaced with a head & neck. I Fixit Sculpted the neck, dremeling the chain mail on it. I also Sculpted the shoulder pieces, arm bands, wrist bands & helmet. I chose TwoBads head for the head as he is a reptile and his lower jaw would work well with saurods protruding lower part of his helmet. Once again the head was done over several days allowing for drytime and done in sections. when finished painting I added a screw in the top of the neck to secure his head, drilling holes in the neck & head. Fixit sculpting around the hole inunder his head to seal it. I then added the tail & finished the paint! Total work time was over 17 hours, not counting drytime for the several individual pieces. ![]() |
