First saw this movie on motel cable, and it has to be hands-down the weirdest, most tripped out film ever made! Written & directed by David Lynch, the movie doesn't really focus on any kind of a story, but rather wallops the viewer with lots of nightmares and dreamscapes. Filmed in B+W, the movie is set in an industrial town in which giant machines are constantly working, spewing smoke, and making noises that are unrecognizable. Henry Spencer lives in a building that, like all the others, appears to be abandoned. The lights flicker on and off, he has bowls of water in his dresser drawers, and for his only source of entertainment he watches and listens to the Lady in the Radiator sing about finding happiness in Heaven. Henry has a girlfriend, Mary X, who has frequent spastic fits. Mary gives birth to Henry's child, a frightening looking fetus that cries all night. Actually the toddler is quite cute, in a wrinkly mutant sort of way. Everyone who've watched this movie will have their own interpretation of it. There's really no use in defining the underlying meaning. Depending on the viewer's state of mind and the dexterity of their imagination, the movie can trigger open all sorts of strange feelings. To quote a famous line from another sci-fi movie, "buckle your seat belt Dorothy, 'cuz Kansas is going bye-bye". And that pretty much sums up Eraserhead. Experience it. Thanks for checking this out. ![]() |
