THE PENGUIN

A nice, clean 6 inch scale action figure of Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot (aka THE PENGUIN) was going to be a MUST for my “Legends Of Gotham City” Collection.

I will state from the start that I am NOT a fan of the post-Tim Burton concept of The Penguin. My preference definitely leaned toward the classic Silver Age version of this character.

In the end, a figure that I would consider suitable for my collection required a serious amount of customizing effort on my part. From the configuration of a proper anatomy, to the scratch building of accessories, The Penguin was certainly one of the more complex and challenging custom action figures of this series.

As a base figure for my custom, I decided to use the DC Direct Penguin action figure (available in the Silver Age Penguin & Catwoman Deluxe Set). But right from the start, the very limited articulation, excessively rotund proportions, and off-balance posture of The Penguin were a big disappointment. The legs on this figure were actually static and non-poseable! They forced the figure into a permanent forward leaning posture, which made it impossible for him to even stand on his own! The feet were badly undersized, and the arms were excessively long and spread far apart.

I also did not care for the Mattel DC Universe Classics Penguin figure with its long “gorilla” arms, over-sized hands, frightening face sculpt, and non-traditional depiction of the character’s tuxedo. But the figure did feature a nicely sculpted, nicely articulated pair of working legs!

After a LOT of surgery to correct wardrobe and exaggerated anatomy, I was able to combine the grossly over-weight top half if the DC Direct Penguin, with the much slimmer lower body of the DC universe Classics character.

I fashioned a straighter more elegantly shaped Top Hat (taken from the Mattel DC Universe figure’s head sculpt). I also made a pair of umbrella accessories (open and closed) out of the DC Direct accessory, the Kenner Super Powers Penguin umbrella, and some odd household items.

A detailed step by step look at the creation of this action figure is available in the forums under my “Legends of Gotham City” thread.

Very nicely done I totally agree with this figure and the need for it but I have a question the actual height is? Do you have a pic of it next to a joker or batman for size comparison? Other than that I think this looks wonderful awesome and very professional.

Thanks for the nice comment, Bob. I will be doing size-comparison photos in a few weeks when all of the characters of this series are done.

I can tell you that I am working VERY hard to make sure sure that everyone has a CORRECT relative height to each other (despite STANDARDIZED available action figure heights across the board from toy manufacturers).

With The Batman himself standing at 6.5 inches (to the top of his head, NOT to the tips of his ears), I scaled The Penguin at 5.5 inches (to the top of his head, NOT to the top of his top hat). I scaled Robin the Boy Wonder at 4.75 inches.

This all works out to 11.38 scale.

At this scale, with these action figure proportions (assuming a real-life Batman stands at 6 feet 2 inches tall), The Penguin, then, would measure in at 5 feet 2.5 inches tall. And Robin The Boy Wonder (roughly 12 year old) would stand at 4 feet 6 inches.

I hope that helps.

That is exactly how it should be bro. I don't doubt that there is others who are as anal about that as you and I are about the height. Worse figure ever is a 1/12scale 6'6" Wolverine by hasbro grrrr .
