Custom #: | 52077 | Name: | Cyclops with Optic Blast | Custom Type: | Action Figure | Toy Series: | X-Men | Creator: | customapprentice | Date Added: | July 24, 2013 | Base Figure: | DCUC Black Lantern | Height: | 6.00 inches |
Hello. Once I completed the brown-suit Wolverine I had to have an 80's style Cyclops. I've wanted to do this custom for a long time actually but just recently acquired the perfect base. So maybe I rushed it,.. I started with a DCUC Black Lantern figure, removed the lantern costume details with the dremmel tool and an x-acto knife. Then I sculpted the top of the boots and the bottom of the gloves. The visor is a random piece of fodder that kinda looked like a visor so I sculpted over it. The optic blast itself is just two thin pieces of plastic glued together and painted, then attached to the visor with glue. The entire figure was painted in the 80's uniform colors. *UPDATE* Thank you to everyone who made a suggestion and offered their feedback. It was most helpful but I think I am done with this custom now. I may revisit this guy in the future but I have a few other projects I'd like to start. Thank you all for your comments and help. Please wait... |

The optic blast may seem simple, but it works and looks good. If you want something with a bit more substance/thickness, you could look at plastic silverware. I know some other customizers have used clear (or clear red) silverware and just cut the flat handle off.
The vizor looks good, I wouldn't change it! I like that you made it metallic, it helps it stand out. I've always thought of the vizor as a constructed piece of machinery, made out of metal. I don't think it would be a flat yellow like his costume. You, also, didn't go overboard with it's size.
Your paint work, also, looks good. The yellow came out really well. Yellow has always been a pain for me. Maybe, give the figure a matte seal to take down the shiny-ness?
I would suggest you just focus on little details to add, like a belt. Cyclops usually had a belt with this style of costume. Sometimes it was red with a square yellow X buckle, sometimes it was the same yellow as the rest of the suit. You could add the top part of the mask, too.
Dude thank you so much for reminding me about the belt. I knew something was missing yet I totally forgot about the belt!
JonMichael thank you again for the awesome suggestions and feedback bro' I'm grateful!
