So Hasbro put out a gray Hulk, but it did not do a whole lot for me. But it got me thinking - wouldn't a small "first appearance" shelf be nice? Iron Man, Captain America, and a few others are pretty well covered, but they need company. So this is the first of a mini-project. A little history: Hulk debuted in 1962 in issue 1 of his own comic. He was initially gray. On the day of the gamma bomb test, Bruce Banner was wearing an orange shirt and blue pants (at the beginning of the story he also had a white labcoat and a black tie). So naturally, the Hulk had the same in his first panels. By his second transformation in Act Two of the same issue, Hulk is in purple pants and a white shirt, but was still gray. Then, at the beginning of issue #2, his origin is recapped. The same scene is retold, but with no explanation, Banner is now wearing purple pants and the Hulk is green. Rick Jones is also wearing completely different clothes. But a era is born! To capture his first appearance look, I took the most recent single carded gray Hulk, added the more Frankenstein-like head from the original Avengers three-pack, added a shirt from the Marvel Legends Living Mummy (Ha! No soft goods!), and painted the head gray and dry-brushed orange onto the mainly-brown mummy shirt and brightened the blue on his pants. Viola! ![]() |
