Joshua Nolan is the Chief Lawkeeper of Defiance. He fought in the Pale Wars starting at age 20, and the conflict eventually caused the loss of his wife and child. Sometime after, he became an Ark Hunter, dealing with threats that came about during Arkfalls.

He ended up killing an Irathian criminal who had a young daughter named Irisa Nyira. Nolan adopted her as his own, and took her with him as he headed back to his hometown of St. Louis. What he found in the ruins was Defiance, where he took up residency and became the local lawman.
