John Carter, Prince of Helium, Warlord of Mars, known to the Tharks as Dotar Sojat (the "right arms" of the Thark jeddak Tars Tarkas), is a 102 year-old sci-fi character written by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Carter was a Virginian, and was a captain in the Confederate Army during the civil war. After the war, he found a mysterious cave that transported him to Mars, which the natives call Barsoom. As a character with a 102 year history, John Carter has been portrayed many different ways by various artists and films. Here, I chose a classic look - he is usually scantily clad and carries a sword and a "radium pistol." There is a large number of reference images available, many dating back decades. I did not try to replicate any particular one look, but decided instead to capture the spirit of the character. I was heavily influenced by Marvel Comics' version (28 issues and 3 annuals between 1977 and 1979). I think this was my first exposure to the character and loved the great Gil Kane art (which he stylistically revisited in 1983 for DC's Sword of the Atom). body - MU Sub-Mariner head - custom cast of Hugh Jackman Wolverine, modified slightly to get rid of the muttonchops chain mail skirt - King Laufey from the Thor movie line boots - MU Baron Zemo arm guard (top) - Injustice Aquaman arm guard (bottom) - MU Nova, modified armored collar - MU Kang the Conqueror armored epaulets on the collar - MU Nova radium gun - Ric Olie sword - saw it on Taobao (I have no idea what line it was made for) ![]() |
