The early 1960s saw a rash of crazy caricature monster kits spearheaded by Hawk’s “Weird-Ohs”. The Marx toy company cashed in on the craze with a bunch of inexpensive, one-piece polyethylene figures. Those in the first batch were resculpts of the Hawk “Weird-Ohs” (which really looked a lot better than the Hawk model kits). Marx quickly followed these with their own collection of bizarre characters called “Nutty Mads”. The Thinker was one of the crazy figures released in 1963.

This was a pretty simple custom, with just the magazine, roll of toilet paper and the tile floor added to the basic figure. It was common practice to give the funny monsters skin colors from all over the spectrum, so I had no problem picking gray to emulate the original statue. I airbrushed acrylics over a primer coat of polyurethane varnish. The mag is actually a BPMS Bulletin, the monthly model club newsletter I produced for more than five years; I just reduced it in Photoshop. The floor was cut from Evergreen sheet stock.

Completed in 2011.

I'm a big fan of the Nutty Made series. Shame we don't see more of this classic stuff repainted.

I painted a lot of the large Marx figures – Nutty Mads, Weird-Ohs, Universal Monsters, Cavemen, Vikings, Campus Cuties – when they were first released, but got disheartened when the paint started cracking and flaking off. It took several years for me to realize that polyethylene figures needed to be coated with something to get enamel paints to adhere well to the slick surface. The model building magazines recommended thinned white glue, but a friend suggested clear polyurethane varnish (Red Devil brand, specifically). That worked beautifully, and I’ve painted many soft plastic figures using that technique over the ensuing decades with no problems. Unfortunately, I haven’t gotten back to doing very much with the original Marx figures. I absolutely HATE sanding parting lines from polyethylene figures, so I guess that has put me off from doing more of this sort of stuff. Cleaning up The Thinker seemed unending!
