I was a fan of Frank Frazetta’s fantasy art work before I knew who Frazetta was. As a child, I saw his paintings on the covers of books and magazines and was awestruck at how beautifully he could render primal power and ferocity. In the early 80’s I saw the animated movie, “Fire and Ice”, based on his artwork (if you haven’t seen it, you need to) and that initial viewing seared the character of “Darkwolf” into my mind forever. I had made an animation accurate version but wanted to make a new figure that was more representative of Frazetta’s art. I saw Dr.F8’s Jaguar God custom (Verotic based Jaguar God on Darkwolf’s design) and it inspired me to break out the Exacto, Sculpty and paints. Darkwolf is comprised of a LCBH Conan’s head, torso and legs, with ML Thor’s biceps and forearms (these are more imposing than Conan’s and I wanted this figure to have the bone crushing look of Frazetta warriors). I sculpted the panther cowl, made the boots furry and created the battle axe and bone/tooth necklace with Super Sculpty. The fur loin cloth (front and back) came from a MOTU Man-at-Arms. I’m proud that I was able to maintain all the articulation the base figure had. To ensure his head would be moveable, I used Sculpty Mold Maker to create pliable, rubber like flaps that flex instead of breaking. Finshed him off with hand painted acrylics. I love how Darkwolf came out and may build him a diorama and companions (Larn and Teegra) at some point. ![]() |

I've done a ton of dry brushing but this was the first time I had to use it to render such a large amount of flesh. Most people would have gone with a wash but I was confident realistic skin could be pulled off with dry brushing.
