The second I built Salaak, I knew I was going to have to build a new Kilowog, because all the Kilowog figures I had were now too short. Kilowog is one of those weird characters (like Catwoman) where despite having many figures made of himself in the right approximate scale, not a single one of them is very good. The movie figure is pretty good, but a bit short. Since I had to keep Kilowog in scale to my Salaak I'd made in scale, I was aiming for about 6 inches height, but I ended up getting only slightly over 5.5, which is fine, he's still just barely taller than Salaak. As it turns out, I slightly over-scaled my Salaak figure, guess I was reading my ruler wrong. Anyway, I was operating under the assumption that Kilowog is 7'8, just two inches taller than Salaak, but recently I've started finding sites that list him as being 8'3, so I'm not sure what his actual height is. My figure definitely is closer to 7'8 in scale.

A big part of the challenge with this figure was figuring out which parts to use to get the right approximate scale, body type, and proportion, which wasn't super-easy, since I had to steer away from the 4.5 inch standard body types with this. I knew right off I'd probably be destroying some Toy Biz figures, since they were pretty diverse in body types and varieties of characters made, and furthermore, I could get them cheap and I'd feel no shame in destroying them. I knew I'd be using Strong Guy, but upon receiving the figure, was quickly disappointed to find his body wasn't anywhere as near as bulky, or grossly out of proportion as I thought it would be. So I moved on and picked up a Ch'od figure to get the larger chest, which worked and gave the figure that top-heavy look I was going for. The arms were all wrong though. At this point I was stumped, and it took me a while to figure out what figure I could pick up that would have the right arms. My buddy had an old Metalhead figure that was busted and he was happy to give it to me. That figure, by chance, had absolutely perfect arms, all the way down to the number of fingers. As for the head, that was the first piece I'd picked up, having ripped the head off from a Happy Meal Kilowog toy and sanding down the neck to my liking.

So it broke down like this: head- Happy Meal toy, arms and crotch- Metalhead, legs- Strong Guy, and upper torso- Ch'od. With all the pieces together, I had to get to some serious sanding and dremeling. Every single piece I was using had stuff on it I didn't want and couldn't use for the figure. I had to drill out a hole or two also to make everything fit, and then added to the joints on the limbs to make them tighter. Somewhere along the way I sculpted a Green Lantern ring onto Kilowog's finger. After that it was on to the standard practice of painting the parts, assembly, Dullcote, and acrylic sealant.

This actually ended up being a decently difficult build, what with having to figure out what to assemble him from, and having to pick up a bunch of new paints I didn't have. I'm very, very, very pleased with the way this figure came out, though. Absolutely everything on him came out right: proportions of the body parts, finger count, placement of the neck, bulkiness of the body, etc. Something about his large upper torso and relatively tiny legs also started giving me repeated flashbacks of the He-Man toys of my youth. Like my G'nort figure, I haven't permanently glued this figure together yet, holding him together instead with earthquake putty, in case I decide I want to cast molds of his body parts, all of which are heavily modified, in the near future. At some point I'm either going to find or build a Green Lantern power battery large enough for him to hold, but it's not a huge priority at the moment.
