Back in the 1980s, Citadel/Games Workshop made a line of soft plastic figures called “Fighting Fantasy”. I don’t know if the series was generally available in the United States; I certainly don’t remember seeing it here. I picked up a bunch of the figures when I visited England back in 1985. The Ferocious Ogre was one of the larger figures in the line. It came with two different heads and an assortment of weapons. Both hands were designed to hold weapons, but I felt that just having the ax over his head was enough, so I replaced the clenched left hand with a more realistic opened and relaxed one. The new hand came from an Aurora Frankenstein Monster model kit. I had to cut the fingers at each joint to get them to curl into the right pose. Attaching the hard styrene hand to the soft polyethylene figure required pinning it to the wrist and to the base to keep it in position. I added the small skull (ogres are large creatures) and chain because the chain was the easiest way to hide the head-to-neck joint! Durham’s Rock Hard Water Putty was used for the ground work and rocks, and the plant was formed from A+B Epoxy Putty. The figure is 3” tall to the top of the head and 5.25” to the tip of the ax. Completed in 1990. ![]() |
