Next up in my Year of the Legion project is the Princess of Orando, Princess Projectra. Jeckie, as she was often called (a shortened version of Projectra) possessed the power to create illusions that could affect all five senses. Eventually, she married Legionaire Karate Kid, became Queen of Orando, watched her husband be murdered by Nemesis Kid, then broke Legion Code by killing Nemesis Kid. Yeah, a lot of drama. With all the different relationships, I'm really surprised we've never seen an hour long Legion show on CW. The characters and storylines are ripe with romances, plots of revenge, and twists and turns that would make a great show in my opinion. Anyway, I started Jeckie a few months ago but became discouraged when this cape wouldn't work. I came from DC Collectibles JL Dark Zatanna figure I bought specifically for this project. But for some reason DCC uses a real rubbery material for their capes which acrylics didn't seem to adhere to at all. The paint literally would crack or chip at the touch. So I searched everywhere for a solution, asking online, at hobby shops, hardware stores for any kind of paint good for rubber and came up empty. Then I just happened to be driving by a fine art supply store that I originally just drove by. But then I thought about it, and I wouldn't really have been out that way again, so what did I have to lose? I explained my plight to the clerk, and she did a little research and suggested Angelus Leather Paint. Leather paint? Sounded kind of iffy, but I figured leather is pliable, and would need a paint that was flexible, so at $3 for a 1 oz. jar I gave it a try. And it worked perfect. Better than I could have ever hoped for. I've crinkled and crunched this cape many times and nothing has chipped off at all. And it comes in a lot of colors. It's a water-based acrylic so it fits in perfect for figure customs. Man, I still think those DC Collectible figures are pretty cheaply made, not much better than DC Direct really, but at least now their capes can get re-used. So, besides getting the cape from the JL Dark Z figure, I used the Green Lantern Star Sapphire Carol Ferris for a base. I just had to adjust the way the costume covered her bosom and we were ready to go. I switched out the arms for a set from a Batman Legacy Catwoman, added a Gwen Stacy head, with a DC Subscription Ice haircut (didn't even have to repaint it!), and she was ready to stand beside her Legionaire mate. Chalk up another for the 31st Century! Long Live the Legion! Thanks for looking! ![]() |
