I always liked the Hobgoblin BAF Spidey from Hasbro (commonly known as ¨Pizza Spider-Man¨) bu two big things always held it back from being one of my favorites: its weird glossy cheap looking finish and its limited hip articulation. I also didn't like the lack of sculpted webbing but thats now something I'm more accustomed to now and don't really care. So with this custom I wanted to make sure it had a matte look and that I could also improve the hip articulation. Prior to all painting and even any customizing, I modified the hips to have more range. If you want to know how I did this I essentially followed a video on Youtube which you can easily find.I also modiefied the peghole on his back to fit a Toybiz and Mafex flight stand as originally the hole was too small for those. So originally I was just making this into a repaint not particularly based on anything, just another classic Spidey. So after sanding the joints for paint rub I did the following: Painted whole figure in black Painted multiple layers of red and blue where necessary did dark red and blue and black washes with some subtle drybrushing did webbing and front logo with a fine tipped pen As it was the head was repainted but the eyes where left alone. As I looked at my custom though it looked okay but the blue was too bright and I saw some images online many from his first appearances by Steve Ditko, but primarily a bunch of panels from the 90s. These two eras shared in common something you only sometimes see now a days, which is instead of red and blue, the Spidey suit is red and black with blue highlights. I always liked this look in the comics and also distinctly remember that Spidey also looked like that in the first episode of the 90s Spider-man unlimited cartoon. To achieve this look for my Spidey I dry brushed the black onto the really light blue of the figure, and then went back with a finer brush to thicken the areas drybrushed. I then went with a paintwash with a lightblue which made the figure really pop. Now getting into the "McFarlane-izing" of this figure. After looking at the figure with the black and red color scheme and back at those images online, I decided I may as well go all the way with this and make it a McFarlane Spider-man. Now I know everyone makes a McFarlane Spider-man, especially here on Figure Realm, but I wanted mine to be very specific to the look from the comics. So I sanded the eyes off the head, as well as reshaped the jaw slightly to be more in line with the art. I painted the eyes with a matte white and all the linework and black parts of the signature big ol´eyes of McFarlane's artwork is again done with a fine tipped pen. I also redid the Spider logog to match the artwork. Now I have my very own McFarlane Spider-man which I am very happy with. I still want to add a few things like the armpit webbing which I'm still trying to figure out how to do effectively. I don't know if you can notice int he pics but there is some slight paintrub still which I can always touch up. ![]() |
