Lieutenant Colonel James Rupert Rhodes III aka Rhodey, is an African American, born in the southern sector of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Lieutenant Colonel of the United States Marine Corps, Rhodes served on duty shifts in Southeast Asia as a fighter pilot. During a mission, the helicopter in which he was traveling was shot down by Viet Cong missiles, being stranded in the middle of the jungle in enemy territory. After being shot down, James looked for a way out of the jungle and on his way he met Tony Stark, who was wearing an iron suit of his invention. Rhodes faced Iron Man believing he was an enemy, but Iron Man proves to be on the soldier's side by rescuing him from an ambush.
