Conquers the Palace of Poison (Mighty Max) Review
Conquers the Palace of Poison
Mighty Max (Blue Bird)Looking back on my childhood; a few Mighty Max toys jump out at me with a great deal of not only nostalgia, but also sentimentality. "Mighty Max Conquers the Palace of Poison" is one such toy.
I recall coming home from school one day; and my mom was outside our house, decorating for either fall/autumn or perhaps Halloween. I can't recall precisely, but it was one or the other. She told me she bought me a surprise in town; and I could have it once I finished my homework; if I had any. Usually I didn't, but that day I did. How I rushed inside to get it done! Didn't even go to my room, just straight to the kitchen table and finished up that homework in record time! Work done and surprise in hand, I fell in love with Palace of Poison before I ever even tore it free of the package.
It simply hit all the right chords with me. A mummy villain! Giant scorpion! A tomb filled with serpents! Awesome!
First, the exterior. A yellow, green-eyed snake coiled and perhaps ready to strike. The scorpion's stinger can be seen from the outside and serves as the snake's rattle. Very cool. Raise the snake's head up and you're treated to a cool little sticker of a dig site, complete with tools for digging. And cooler than that, a glimpse of the Mummy King himself!
The interior is fantastic; arguably one of the best designs in the entire Mighty Max line. An ancient Egyptian tomb; crawling with venomous snakes! Think of Indiana Jones!
So many details carved into the interior: green and red snakes, skeletons, hieroglyphics; vases; a golden statue probably of Anubis; and a treasure horde. There's also a box/tomb like thing on the floor with a sphinx on the lid. The lid can be slid open; revealing a skull and stuff inside. Also to be found in the interior is a two-piece vine/rope contraption which the Mighty One can use to reach the Mummy King's golden horde; assuming he survives the terrors of the tomb.
But the best feature (to me, anyway) inside this playset is the Mummy King's blue and gold Sarcophagus; which can be opened and closed and contain the Mummy King! Not only is it incredibly awesome; but it just might be the tiniest, working Sarcophagus toy ever made (but I'm not positive of that).
As for the mini-figures; you receive three in this set: Mighty Max, Mummy King and Giant Scorpion. I'll skip Max as I've done with my two previous reviews; and get right to the good stuff.
I really like the Mummy King mini-figure. I could be a bit biased as the Mummy is my favorite classic monster; but the Mummy King is at least not a plain-Jane mummy; as he does have a headdress and clutches a crook staff in one skeletal hand. His face is skeletal-looking; not simply eye holes amongst bandages.
The Giant Scorpion is pretty cool too; the black plastic has some detail and the stinger is painted red. I can remember using the scorpion with larger toys; typically 3.75" figures, perhaps as the pet of some villain or another.
All in all this is one of my very favorite Mighty Max playsets; not just because it holds so much nostalgia and sentimentality for me; but also because it's simply one of the best Doom Zones ever released; and is the very best of series one at least; even though Skull Dungeon gets most of the credit in that regard.
I'm very happy to have this playset again as an adult. It was a pain to find one with the Mummy King in great shape and not with paint scratched all to pieces; plus pricier than I would have liked; but the way it made me feel to have it in hand again after so many years was definitely worth the price.
