Trapped by Arachnoid (Mighty Max) Review
Trapped by Arachnoid
Mighty Max (Blue Bird)While I certainly enjoyed and played with this set as a child; "Mighty Max Trapped by Arachnoid" was never among my favorites. That's kind of unusual, at least for me, as I love spiders. Perhaps it was because this particular Doom Zone is rather plain; compared to most of the others? Let's proceed with the review!
A fun Doom Zone on the exterior, it forms, naturally, a giant spider. The colors of black, purple and green look good together and conjure feelings of Halloween. One of the mini-figures, a giant spider named Creep, lends its mandibles and legs to the exterior; giving it a rather grotesque appearance; as if the spider is dragging along its bloated, bulbous body on legs too small. It also appears to be covered in small egg sacks (one of which is a component of the interior), further adding to the overall "yuck!" factor.
Unfortunately in the interior; there just isn't a whole lot going on. It's a shame really, one could reasonably expect that, since this is a spider-themed playset; it would be positively covered in sculpted webs, spiders and maybe even corpse-shaped cocoons; but that just isn't the case.
The Arachnoid's lair is rather bare bones and strangely sterile; not really gruesome or at least creepy like most other Doom Zones. Now, don't get me wrong. There's plenty to enjoy here. Much of the structure is inspired by webbing and there's lots of skulls and some blood here and there; so the playset isn't as bare bones as I perhaps implied. I guess I'm saying I expected more; considering the theme.
As for features, there's only a couple of things to mention. First, there is the "protein processor"; a switcheroo-type gimmick where he can place Max on one side, Arachnoid on the other; and then turn the device, giving a tame impression of one being replacing or becoming the other; kind of like The Fly. Also there is a purple, web-like cage which you can use to imprison your little figures.
As for the mini-figures themselves; you're served three of them: Mighty Max, Arachnoid and Creep.
Arachnoid is the main villain of the set; a humanoid-like, spider monstrosity with four arms and large, bulbous green eyes and teeth. Aside from his eyes and Teeth he is solid black; and blends in well with the playset; especially when positioned near the back wall.
Creep is a giant spider with a correct number of legs and incorrect number of eyes. His hairy body is painted black and red; adding a little needed color to the mounds of black, purple and a little green in the playset. There's also a place on Creep's back where the Mighty One can stand; perhaps taming and making one heck of a mount out of Creep.
While this was never a favorite toy of mine as a kid; I appreciate it a little more now than I did back then. My review may sound as if I dislike this set, or at least find it boring; but that isn't entirely accurate. I love it for what it is, a Mighty Max toy; it simply is more bland and less exciting than some others.
Nevertheless I am happy to have it again as an adult; and glad to have it in the collection.
