Mighty Max (Blue Bird)When it comes to the elusive series three of the Mighty Max Doom Zones; the only one I had as a kid was "Mighty Max Grips the Hand", so I wonder what I would have thought of "Mighty Max Squishes Fly" if I had this playset as a kid.
Typically, I found other similarly themed sets disappointing. Arachnoid and Scorpion were both generally weak to my childhood mind; and quite frankly both felt wanting, especially Scorpion which, while colorful and very cool on the exterior, felt borderline empty, almost incomplete; on the interior.
Fortunately, Fly succeeds on both exterior and interior; in my humble opinion. Let's hash over the exterior first.
The exterior is, you guessed it, a big ol' fly. With purple legs, a green and black body and red eyes; it certainly doesn't lack in color. The large, bulbous eyes are pebbled and cast in a semi-transparent plastic and are simply fun to touch. This Doom Zone will certainly catch your attention! Most Doom Zones are naturally at their best when they're displayed opened up with the mini-figures arranged as you want them; few are the playsets that look just as good closed up. Fly is one of them.
As for the interior; it's a good mix of sterile and nasty. Fly's spaceship features a plethora of monitors and other gear and tech; but one wall is a big web/nest (in which Mighty Max can be dropped in) full of sculpted victims; probably full of larvae and parasites; just waiting to rupture with maggots. The floor of the playset is essentially just a sticker once you remove the robo-fly/vehicle thing; so the real attraction are the walls; especially the head/back wall where we have Fly's control center and such things.
As for mini-figures and accessories; you receive four in this set: Mighty Max, Fly, Drax and the Robot Fly.
Fly is the primary villain of the set; and he's a fun if minuscule figurine. A small, lumpy, purple fly-alien thing with big green-yellow, textured eyes; he's simply a cool little mini-figure. I can easily imagine if, I had this set a child, Fly would form a reluctant partnership with Arachnoid to take down the Mighty One once and for all; secretly scheming against each other all the while; with Fly serving as the brain and Arachnoid as the brawn. The enemy of my enemy is my friend; and all that jazz.
Next we have Drax; Fly's pet. Drax is a giant fly-creature whose moveable clear wings also serve as the wings of the fly on the Doom Zone's exterior. Personally I would have named the main villain Drax and called the giant fly monster simply Fly as opposed to the other way around; but that's neither here nor there. Drax's mandibles are spaced far enough apart so that he can scoop up a variety of mini-figures and carry them off to their doom; perhaps as a meal or to incubate larvae and then be devoured; all up to you.
And lastly we have the Robot-Fly weapon/vehicle. It's pretty cool, one of its mandibles being a saw blade and all; and it instantly conjures thoughts of the Scorpobot from a previous Doom Zone in series two; the generally lackluster "Mighty Max Stings Scorpion". Exact same concept, different bug.
All in all, this Doom Zone shares the middle ground as far as series three goes; with Nautilus and Hand being my favorites, Lizard and Fly in the middle; and Cyber Skull and Rattus being in the rear (that could change, eventually, as my Cyber Skull playset hasn't arrived yet and I don't own the Rattus set at this time). At the end of the day, though, Squishes Fly is simply a fun Doom Zone; entertaining on the outside as well as the inside.
