Write a Review link for that item. Mighty Max (Blue Bird)In the 1990s; dinosaurs were everywhere. No matter if it was Jurassic Park, We're Back!, the Dinosaurs TV show or something else entirely; dinosaurs dominated the 90s; and the world of Mighty Max was not exempt. Okay, I admit it: as a kid, "Mighty Max Blows Up Dino Lab" wasn't one of my favorite Doom Zones. Sounds a little wonky, right? After all, it had so many elements a kid should love: dinosaurs, a mad lab, a volcano hiding a laser gun! What's not to love!? For me, it was the dinosaurs. Mighty Max spoiled me with so many monsters, aliens and feaks; so when Dino Lab came along; I was a little disappointed all around. I simply don't consider extinct, prehistoric beasts, no matter how frightening some may have been, to be monsters. It almost felt a little too mundane for me. At the time! Now that I have this Doom Zone in hand once again; my appreciation is much higher than it was when I was a youngster back in the day. First off, the exterior. Dino Lab's exterior is a triceratops head. Pretty cool if unusual; as the set doesn't come with a triceratops; but that happens more than once throughout the Mighty Max pantheon. As happens more often than not; some of the mini figures (at least pieces of them) can be seen from the exterior; making up some of the horns of the triceratops. The interior is fun and colorful. Part laboratory and part volcano; it's an explosion of colors such as blues, oranges, purple, yellow and green. There's also several cool details that are part of the sculpt; such as a few different lizards and a green arm rising from a sticker and clutching a metal grate bridge. There are some nifty features; such as the opening volcano! Inside is a large rotating gun with foot space for Max; so he can blast every toothy beast in sight. Also pretty cool is the opening cage/cell on the back wall. Not only large enough to hold one of the included dinosaurs; but also your mini-figures. As for the figurines, you get four in this set: Mighty Max, Professor Zygote, and two dinosaurs; a pterodactyl and a raptor. Professor Zygote is our primary antagonist here; and jeez was he disappointing as a kid. It all goes back to previous Mighty Max toys that spoiled me; where we were treated to aliens, mummies, dragons and basically the Frankenstein Monster; but now suddenly we have a villain that looks like a middle-aged bachelor on vacation. Professor Zygote reminds me of the likes of Tor Johnson or George "The Animal" Steele at best; or a second-rate Captain Planet villain at worst. Until you look at his backside that is; where his shirt is ripped open and a glimpse of a terribly malformed spine is visible. Did he just drink some concoction from the culture tube in his hand? Is he about to transform into something hideous like Dr. Jekyll or some mutant from Swamp Thing? Who knows, but it's a cool little detail I never paid much mind to as a kid. Our next mini-figures are both dinosaurs; an orange raptor and a green pterodactyl. The pterodactyl is one of my favorite dinosaurs; so naturally it's my favorite of the two figurines. With the pterodactyl positioned on the ground next to the volcano and the raptor locked away in the cell; the pterodactyl's beak and the raptor's tail make two of the triceratops horns on the exterior. This is such a fun Doom Zone; and I'm glad I had a personal Mighty Max revival; giving this playset a second chance and dramatically altering my memory and opinion of it. It wasn't much fun for me when I was of the age this toy was marketed for; but twenty-six years later? It's awesome!  by Greedo1138 |
