Movie Star Don (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) Review
Movie Star Don
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Playmates)In 1990, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hit the big screen in their first movie, and it proved to be very popular with fans. It then received two more, less popular sequels. But I'm not here to ramble on about a movie series...

Many years before NECA did their own take on the movie turtles, Playmates Toys, the main men behind the TMNT toy line, did a series of "Movie Star Turtles", which took inspiration from the first two films. I grabbed Donatello in this style a while back from a toy store for $50. I know, pretty high price, but old toys like these tend to go up in value.

Packaging - 4.5/5

This figure shares the same type of cardback packaging as other figures in the line, but with more of a movie theme. Case in point, the front of the card has a couple screenshots from Secret of the Ooze, along with a list of accessories, or "supporting players".

On the back of the card, there's another screenshot from the movie, along with photos of his accessories and a biography that can be cut out. The card isn't too bad, though it would've been nicer to have a checklist of figures from the line as a whole as well as some images from the first movie.

There's nothing holding down the figure inside the bubble, but the accessories are kept in place with tape.

Sculpt - 4.65/5

This Donatello is based off of how he appears in the movies, or at the very least, the second movie. He's got the long bandana tail and slightly creepy smile. There's plenty of texturing on his body, and the shell has a little more detail than the regular figures. And as per usual, the belt is a separate piece from the figure sculpt, and it has a holster for his bo staff.

The special thing about him is that his head and limbs are made of a soft, rubbery material, as the company wanted to give him a more realistic feel, and the hands are able to hold all of his accessories. However, his legs being made out of this soft material results in it being hard for him to stand up. So if you want to put him into more dynamic poses, you might want to use a display stand.

Donnie stands about 4" tall, making him in-scale with the rest of the line.

Paint - 4.9/5

The paint job on the figure is very well done, especially for a mass market figure from the early 90s. The head and limbs are yellowish-green rubber with painted on elbow/knee guards and face, and the paint application is neat and there's barely any noticeable slop.

My only issue with the paint are the ugly yellow and black spots on the figure. While it's supposed to resemble the movie, they shouldn’t stand out this much, and they should be more faded in appearance. Other than that, the paint job is excellent.

Articulation - 3.25/5

The rubbery limbs meant that Playmates had to do something different from the standard articulation. The neck, shoulders, and hips are all ball-joints, and they had to give up the forearm/elbow joints. On the bright side, the arms and legs have a big range of motion, allowing for plenty of poses.

Accessories - 5/5

Playmates loves to give their figures accessories, so it's no surprise that Donatello has quite a few.

There's not one, but two bo staffs. Not sure why they gave him two, but I guess they just like to include an extra just in case. He can hold the staff well, but the right hand has a more suited grip.

Also included are a trash can shield, a mutagen container, a "mutant extinguisher", and two shurikens. I don't recall any use of a trash can lid or shurikens in the movie, but the mutagen container definitely makes sense, and the extinguisher comes right from the battle with Tokka and Rahzar.

Knowing Playmates, most of the accessories are simple molded brown and gray plastic with no paint, though the extinguisher and mutagen do have stickers on them. So that's at least something.

Quality - 4.5/5

The figure is pretty decently made, though I will admit I'm not a big fan of the rubber limbs, especially since it makes it hard for him to stand up. Other than that, he's not too bad.

Value - 5/5 (based off of original price)

Back in the day, this figure cost around $4-5, and given how his paint job is great and there are plenty of accessories, he's quite worth it. Well, was. Nowadays, he'll cost you at least ten times as much. So if you're going to get him NIB, you'll need to save up some cash.

Overall - 4.3/5

While both Playmates and NECA have outdone this figure with much better ones, Movie Star Don is still a pretty decent figure. I like the detailed sculpt, good paint, and plenty of accessories, though I'm not sure if making the limbs rubber was a really good decision.

Speaking of movie Turtles, NECA's releasing their Super Shredder from Secret of the Ooze this month, and anybody who was able to pre-order the Tokka and Rahzar two-pack off of their online store will be receiving them in November.
