Savanti Romero (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Mirage Comics) Review
Savanti Romero
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Mirage Comics (Neca)The TMNT universe has been home to all sorts of unique, unusual characters, including the original Mirage comics that were more serious and realistic. After the first few issues involving a tyrannical leader, a mad scientist, and common crooks, we had stories involving dinosaur aliens and time travel. The latest release in the NECA Mirage line is another character from said time travel story, the evil sorcerer Savanti Romero.

Savanti has a rather inhuman look, with giant curved horns, pointed ears, red eyes, and a big jaw and nose. His beastly appearance was caused by Lord Simultaneous, and while nobody knows how he looked beforehand, Gurjeet Singh and Kushwara Studios did a good job bringing his design to plastic form. The head looks nearly spot-on to the comic, with clean paint lines and plenty of wash on the horns, as well as a cool hinged jaw. I think the head should be a little smoother, as it looks off-putting to me, but your milage may vary.

At about 7 1/2" up to the horns, Savanti's goat-like legs are also a result of his failed attempt to overthrow Simultaneous, and bear a furry texture and a mix of brown and black, befitting the comic's style. The sculpt on the upper body is great as well, but his neck is a bit taller than it should be. Most of the paint work is clean, with "ink" lines of varying weights, and the only fuzziness is around the spikes on the shoulders, primarily since they're pretty small. The skin has a slightly noticeable color gradient to it, which I consider unnecessary, but doesn't affect him too much.

Master Savanti has similar articulation to the rest of the line, with a barbell head and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, knees, and ankles, swivel biceps, waist, and thighs, double-hinged elbows, ball hips, and the aforementioned hinged jaw. While a few joints were tight, mainly in the arms, none of them required heat to get broken free, and the range everywhere is pretty good. His waist can't turn all the way around for some reason, and the ankles don't have rocker motion, which can make deeper stances a little tricky to achieve. Having goat hooves means Savanti isn't able to stand on his own very well, hence why he has a base that he can peg onto.

Savanti doesn't have much accessories, but it's all stuff that fits the character. There's the figure stand, of course, and he'll really need it. Three pairs of hands are also included - closed, gripping, and open - and they swap with little resistance. Of course, he has a time scepter, which is sort of similar to the one Renet has, but larger. It looks nice with him, but the tough plastic for the gripping hands means it'll take a bit of work getting him to hold it. My favorite extras are the effect pieces, both a bold shade of green. There's a magic effect that clips onto the scepter, and another hand that goes on the left fist. Parts like these are always fun, since they add more to the figure.

Savanti is another solid release from the Mirage line, and he'll go great with the previously released Renet. As long as NECA continues putting out well-made and unique characters, I'll be more than to happy to keep getting them.
