Leatherhead (Stump Wrestling) (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Neca)) Review
Leatherhead (Stump Wrestling)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Neca) (Neca)After a good variety of characters, it seems as if NECA's TMNT Adventures line is currently focused on the contestants of the intergalactic Stump Wrestling ring. We got the Turtles themselves, but there's also Cryin' Houn' and Leatherhead, both of whom are hitting mass-market retailers now, in addition to two upcoming wrestlers, El Mysterio (just Houn' in another costume) and Ace Duck. I haven't gotten Houn' yet, and the $50 price is making me hesitant to get him, but Leatherhead you shouldn't have too much difficulty finding at Target.

Often times, Adventures had a very cartoony look, and not even the '87 show at its best animation quality could compare. Mitchroney was one of those "cartoony" artists for the comics, and as with most of the figures we've seen so far, Leatherhead adapts his style. The sculpt, done by Tomasz Rozejowski, captures the style and the croc's design well, and he's a bit of a hunchback as well, as opposed to the more upright illustrations of him on the box. He has big, bushy yellow eyebrows, something his toon design didn't have, but his OG toy design did. As with the other Leatherheads NECA's done, this one has a hinged jaw, allowing his mouth to open as wide as it can and still blend in with the sculpt. However, it can't completely close, and it'll always be open at the sides. It makes me wish they included an extra head that swaps out the posable jaw in favor of a clenched teeth look. The paint is clean, with bold colors, but one thing I noticed is that unlike the boxart, he isn't wearing an eye mask. That would've been good for an aforementioned alternate head.

Leatherhead's origin in the comic was different from the cartoon; rather than being an ordinary crocodile that got mutated, he was a human who was cursed into assuming this form. Either way, he still wore the same clothes, except for in the Stump ring, where he wore workout shorts and boots. It's interesting we got this appearance before his standard look, but Rozejowski did a great job with it, and the clean paint helps. At a bit over 6" tall, Leatherhead isn't a large figure by any means, but he's still quite buff. Helping bring out the look is that his body is covered in scales, like a real croc, and the texture and depth of the sculpt enhances a usually cartoony design quite a bit. You still have painted lines on the body, including some to highlight his pecs and six-pack, and the paint overall is some of the cleanest I've ever seen on these figures.

Jess Harley may have plenty of movement, but he suffers from a few hinderances. He has a barbell-jointed head that tilts up and down plenty, but the design limits any other range, and it doesn't help the head comes off a lot. There are swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and wrists as usual, alongside bicep swivels, though the biceps are really chunks of plastic overlaying elongated sockets for the elbow pegs. The chest is another barbell joint with some decent range, and below that are ball-jointed hips, swivel waist and thighs, swivel/hinge knees, ankles, and tail, and a bendy wire in the tail. The hip molds remind me of the wrestling Turtles, in that they're designed to conceal the thigh joints, and they work well, but the knees have limited bend, not being able to achieve 90 degrees. On the positive side, the joints all move with ease, and he also gets three sets of hands: closed, gripping, and wide open. It's a shame that those are his only accessories, and once again, an extra head would've helped a lot.

We've gotten some great figures from the Adventures line, and Leatherhead… isn't quite as great as them. Sure, he looks great, with some of the best texturing and paint for this line, but the limited articulation and lack of accessories holds him back. That said, he'll go great with the other Stump Wrestling figures, especially the upcoming Ace Duck, but unless you plan on getting those as well, I'd suggest waiting for a regular version to go with the Mutanimals crew.
